Christmas Adventures

December 25, 2008

Yesterday we went to walk down to the river intending to walk along it and do some sight seeing but something really cool happened. One of the guys on our team started playing with a plastic ‘’soccer” ball with a kid which turned into a full on game of soccer. The guys on our team against the Cambodian kids; they were aged from around 3 to 13 i would say. We ended up playing soccer, talking with the kids, playing hand games and taking picutres for over an hour. It was also really cool to see how the people around like on the streets and the vendors would stop to watch. I dont think they expected white people to stop and take the time to play with their kids. It also made our whole team very excited to be working at an orphanage. Some guys dont do well with kids but i think every person on our team guys & girls loves kids so our team is very well made to be doing what we are going to do in Cambodia.

Another interesting thing we ended up doing was we spotted a Christmas tree so we all stopped to take picutres in front of it. A store had set it up in outside and when we all stopped the people inside started playing “Jingle Bells” really loud on their speakers so we all started singing which turned into us holding hands and dancing around the tree. So here we are a group of 12 white people in the middle of Cambodia on Christmas day dancing around a christmas tree .. it was hilarious. Local people all took out their phone’s and got movies and pictures of us. When we were leaving the people in the store started playing the music even louder like they wanted us to do it again it was awesome.

For our Christmas meal we went to the mall here which is very westernized and was about 5 or 6 stories high. It was huge but we had pizza for supper which was like pizza back home and was good. Then we went to a place called Swanson’s for ice cream for dessert and i am telling you that is the best ice cream i have had in a long time. If we had one of those in Calgary i would eat at it everday. All in all it ended up being a good Christmas for me down here which i am very thankful for. Hope your’s is filled with just as much cheer back home!

We leave this morning .. December 26th for us .. at 11:15 on a bus to take a 4 hour drive down to the village we are going to be staying in for our remaining time. We are all very excited to get there. If you could pray for our safety as we travel that would be awesome.
